Delhi police arrest man for 'instigating' Agnipath protesters in Delhi

NEW DELHI, 18th June (PTI) Delhi police have arrested a man for allegedly making an inflammatory speech and inciting young people to protest the Agnipath program here, officials said on Saturday.

Police said Surender Sharma, aka Fauji, delivered the alleged speech to a gathering of 50 to 60 agitators during the protest near the gate of the MCD office in Baba Haridas Nagar on Friday morning.

Young people chanted slogans calling for the withdrawal of the recently announced Agnipath program that recruits soldiers for the armed forces on four-year contracts.

The protesters were moved to one side of the road to avoid disrupting traffic, a senior police official said, adding they were then told to disperse peacefully.

Later, Sharma, a resident of Asalatpur Khawad village near Daulatpur, joined the protest and began "inciting" the agitators with his inflammatory speech. He also had a fight with police personnel there, Deputy Police Commissioner (Dwarka) M Harsha Vardhan said.

A total of 18 protesters were arrested at the scene and booked as part of preventive action, police said.

An FIR under sections 186 (hindering a public official in the performance of his official duties), 353 (assault or criminal violence to deter a public official), and 332 (intentional bodily harm to deter a public official) were registered against Sharma on Friday, the PCD said. Referral Link
